DMV FAQs

What DMV services are offered for New York? +

Please see our services, as well as related forms and pricing details here.

DMV services are subject to verification from Federal Databases.  These systems may have unexpected outages that are out of AAA’s control.  Unfortunately, during an outage, the transaction cannot be completed until the system is back online.

What DMV services are NOT offered? +

Examples of services we CANNOT perform. If you need any of the below services, we cannot assist at a AAA Branch, and you will need to visit a New York DMV office.

  • Remove, clear or accept payment for income tax blocks, parking violations, E-ZPass violations or tickets
  • No vehicle registration or title record abstracts
  • No new registration/plates for boats or snowmobiles
  • Note on Puerto Rican Birth Certificates: Due to Law 191, only Puerto Rican birth certificates with an ISSUE date of January 1, 2010, or later will be accepted. Puerto Rican birth certificates issued prior to October 1, 2010, are no longer acceptable per law.

What should I know about making a reservation for a DMV service? +

  • At this time, we can only service one transaction type per visit.
  • Each individual person in need of a service will need to have made their own reservation.
  • You will need a current AAA membership in your name in order to receive DMV services through AAA. We are unable to assist non-members at this time.
  • We can only assist with the DMV transactions that are listed on the reservation form.
  • Due to high demand, available reservation times may be full. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that you check back frequently, as new slots are made available throughout the day.
  • A reservation is not required for passport photos.
  • Make a reservation here.
  • If you need to cancel or change an existing reservation, you can do so from your confirmation email.
  • DMV services, at AAA, can be paid by Cash, Check or Credit Card.
    • Checks must be made payable to AAA.
      • Exception for Registrations: Per NY State Law, if a loan has been taken out to purchase the vehicle, a Notice of Lien (MV-900) is required, including a separate $5.00 check issued by the financial institution, payable to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, EXCEPT if the financial institution has submitted the notice electronically. If a loan/lien is being removed from the current title, a Notice of Recorded Lien (MV-901) is required or a letter from the financial institution stating that lien has been satisfied.

General Information

Effective 5/7/2025, a federal law goes into effect requiring a new type of identification – Real ID – for anyone 18 years and older. This new law requires a Real ID compliant ID to:

  • Board federally regulated commercial aircraft
  • Accessing federal facilities
  • Enter nuclear power plants

After 5/7/2025, a Standard License or Non-Driver ID Card will NOT be acceptable to enter the locations noted above. You will need either the REAL ID Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID Card or another acceptable form of identification*, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card, or US military ID. *For a complete list of acceptable documents, visit: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification

REAL ID endorsements for a NY Driver’s License or NY Non-Driver ID Card can be processed at select AAA branch locations for AAA members only, but you will need to present certain physical documents to prove your identity. All New York members interested in obtaining a REAL ID should refer to the New York DMV website for complete information, download the application, and see a list of acceptable documents that must be physically presented during your transaction. If your license transaction requires a new photo, one will be taken by the DMV system. Please note we cannot use user-submitted photos, or photos from a mobile phone for a DMV transaction. New York DMV Federal REAL ID Website: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/federal-real-id

Enhanced ID (EDL). For an additional fee, New York residents, who are US Citizens, have another option that is Real ID compliant. An Enhanced (EDL) endorsement on a Driver’s License, permit or Non-Driver ID is a New York State DMV issued document that you can use instead of a passport to return to the US by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. It is not acceptable for air travel between these countries. We recommend you contact your travel agent, your cruise line, or the specific countries of destination to verify your travel document requirements.

As with Real ID, you can apply for the EDL at select AAA branch locations for AAA members only, but you will need to present certain physical documents to prove your identity. All New York members interested in obtaining an EDL must refer to the New York DMV website for complete information, download the application, and see a list of acceptable documents that must be physically presented during your transaction: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-enhanced-driver-license-edl
