Bicycle Service FAQs
Is the bicycle service available to all members?
Yes, the bicycle service is available to all AAA Northeast members, including Basic, Plus, Premier (both Primary and Associate) and INsiders. Your AAA membership card must have a club code of 240 or 097. The bicycle service is not available to members of other AAA clubs.
Do I need to enroll to take advantage of the bicycle service?
No, all members are automatically enrolled.
What's the cost?
Bicycle Service is included as a benefit to all AAA Northeast members at no additional charge.
Who’s covered by the bicycle service?
Coverage is for the member whose bicycle is disabled or inoperable and accompanying minors. (Teenagers who are old enough to drive or enroll in an Associate membership do not qualify for this exception.)
If I’m too tired to continue with my bike ride, will AAA pick me up?
No, the bicycle service does not cover rider fatigue or physical inability to continue with the ride.
How many bicycle service calls am I allowed?
Two bicycle service calls are available per member, per membership year, regardless of membership level, member tenure or the number of members in a household.
Does a bicycle service call count towards my automotive service call allotments?
No. Bicycle service calls are separate from a member’s existing automotive service call allotment.
Do I have to show my AAA membership card to obtain service?
Yes. Just like with vehicle roadside assistance, you must show a valid AAA membership card (club code 240 or 097) and another form of identification. INsiders are not required to show a second form of identification.
Can I use the AAA mobile app or Passbook app on my iPhone as proof of membership for the bicycle service?
Yes, when receiving bicycle roadside assistance, you can show your AAA membership card on the AAA mobile app or Passbook app, as long as you have another valid form of identification.
If I’m not a current member of AAA Northeast, can I sign up for just the bicycle service?
No. At this time, we do not offer a separate bicycle membership. However, bicycle coverage is included at all membership levels at no additional charge.
If I’m not a current AAA Northeast member and I place a bicycle service call, will I be subject to a same-day service charge?
Yes, to become a AAA Northeast member and receive services that same day, an additional service charge will apply.
Are there special rules for INsiders?
Yes. A member parent or guardian must place the call to AAA to request bicycle roadside assistance. Once they’ve given their consent, the parent/guardian does not need to be on site for the INsider to receive assistance.
Do I have to show my AAA INsider card to obtain service?
Yes. You must show a valid AAA INsider membership card. A second form of identification is not required for minors.
What happens if an INsider calls AAA directly for assistance?
The call counselor will remind the teen that we need the permission of a member parent or guardian before providing assistance. Then the counselor will attempt to contact a parent/guardian to inform them of the situation.
If I’m riding with my teen and his/her bicycle breaks down, can they become an INsider on the spot and take advantage of the free bicycle service?
Yes, there’s no charge for the INsider program. As long as the teen meets the eligibility requirements, they’re welcome to join at any time. In fact, we encourage it! In addition, the teen will not be charged a same-day service fee for joining on the spot.
How can I enroll my teen in the INsider program so they can take advantage of the free bicycle service?
To enroll your teen in the INsider program, call 1-800-222-8252, visit AAA.com/INsider or stop by your local AAA branch.
What types of bicycles do you cover?
We cover non-motorized bicycles that can be transported on standard bike racks. If you've rented a bicycle, as long as it fits on a bike rack, it’s covered, too. Excluded from coverage are motorcycles, electric scooters, mopeds, motorized bicycles or motorized vehicles of any kind.
Are recumbent bicycles, 3-wheel trikes (triplets), tandem and other more unusual bikes included?
No. We cover bicycles that can be serviced using our standard vehicles that have been equipped with bike racks.
Will we provide service for small trailers being towed by bicycles (the kind typically used to tow a young child or groceries)?
Trailers will only be transported if they can fit in the service vehicle. Otherwise, we can assist you in obtaining alternate transportation at your own expense.
What phone number do I call for bicycle service?
Call 1-800-AAA-Help (1-800-222-4357), the same as you would for automotive roadside assistance.
What’s the procedure for placing a bicycle service call?
When calling for bicycle service, identify yourself by your AAA membership number and name. Be certain to specify that you need assistance with your bicycle. It’s important so we send a service vehicle equipped with a bike rack to your location.
Where is service provided?
Service is available on normally traveled roads within the AAA Northeast territory, which consists of Rhode Island, the following counties in Connecticut: New Haven, Fairfield and Litchfield, and in Massachusetts: Barnstable, Berkshire, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester, New Hampshire: Salem, and in New Jersey: Essex, Morris and Union, and in New York: Long Island, in the five boroughs of New York City, and in Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie and Herkimer counties, and parts of Lewis, Madison and Oneida counties.
What if my bike breaks down off-road, like on a bike path, beach, field or wooded area? Can I still get service?
Service will be provided if you can safely move the bicycle to a normally traveled road.
Will you provide bicycle repairs at the roadside?
With the member’s permission, minor bicycle repairs may be attempted at roadside at the discretion of the technician.
Do I have to be with my bicycle to receive service?
Yes, we will not service unattended bicycles.
What happens if I’m out riding with my young children and my bike breaks down? Will you also transport my children and their bikes?
We’re limited as to how many passengers and bicycles we can safely transport with our service vehicles. If we can’t accommodate all passengers, we can assist you in obtaining alternate transportation at your own expense.
Why is the transportation limit 10 miles for bicycles and only 3 miles for automobiles?
Service stations can usually be found within a 3-mile radius of most vehicle breakdowns. However, when you’re out riding your bicycle, you usually want to be brought back home or to your vehicle, which may be a longer distance away. In addition, to transport bicycles, we primarily use light service vehicles that cost a lot less to operate.
Can I receive transportation further than 10 miles from where my bike breaks down?
Yes, however, additional mileage will be charged at the prevailing roadside assistance rates for each region.
Can I combine two bicycle service calls so I can avoid being charged for mileage in excess of 10 miles?
If I've already used all my allotted automotive service calls, can I use one of my bicycle service calls instead?
No, bicycle calls cannot be used as automotive calls and vice versa.
If I've already used both of my bicycle service calls, but I have automotive service calls available, can I use one of those as a bicycle call?
No, automotive calls cannot be used as bicycle calls and vice versa.
What happens if I've used my two bicycle calls and I need assistance a third time?
If you've used your two bicycle calls in one membership year, you can still place a bicycle service call and pay the cash call fee. You will be advised of the approximate cost of the call prior to a driver being dispatched.
If I call for bicycle service within the AAA Northeast coverage area, but it’s not available, can I get reimbursed?
Within the AAA Northeast territory, when bicycle service is not available, you should seek bicycle transportation service on your own, pay for the service and send the original, itemized bill and explanation of the circumstances to AAA within 30 days. If the request is approved, you will be reimbursed for covered services at the prevailing rate for the region.
Can I get reimbursed for bicycle service received outside the coverage area of AAA Northeast?
No, service is provided only within the AAA Northeast territory, which consists of Rhode Island, the following counties in Connecticut: New Haven, Fairfield and Litchfield, and in Massachusetts: Barnstable, Berkshire, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester, New Hampshire: Salem, and in New Jersey: Essex, Morris and Union, and in New York: Long Island, in the five boroughs of New York City, and in Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie and Herkimer counties, and parts of Lewis, Madison and Oneida counties.
Is special equipment required to service a bicycle breakdown?
Yes. Some AAA battery or light service trucks will have bike racks mounted on them for safe transportation of your bicycle. In addition, some AAA contractors have purchased bike racks so they can respond to bicycle service calls.
Will you transport my pet, too?
No, we cannot transport pets in our vehicles, but we can help you arrange for alternate transportation at your own expense.
Are there any times when the Bicycle Service won’t be available?
Under certain conditions, the club reserves the right to delay some services until extreme demand for service has passed, e.g., where we or our contractor deem a road is not safely passable due to unusual or extreme weather causing service delay.
Can I use the bicycle service to transport my bike from my home to a bicycle repair shop or other destination?
No, the bicycle service is available only when you’re out riding and something goes wrong with your bicycle, leaving it disabled or inoperable.
Can I transfer one of my bicycle calls to another member or nonmember?
Generally speaking, no. The only exception is that a member parent or guardian can use their bicycle service calls to cover their minor children’s disabled bicycles. (Teenagers who are old enough to drive or enroll in an Associate membership do not qualify for this exception.)
What types of two-wheeled vehicles are excluded from coverage?
Motorcycles, electric scooters, mopeds, motorized bicycles or motorized vehicles of any kind and any bicycles that don’t fit on standard bike racks are excluded from coverage.
Will you help me unlock my bicycle?
No. Because the ownership of the bicycle cannot be verified, we will not service bicycles secured with a lock for which the member has no key or combination.
Do I have to be with my bicycle to receive service?
Yes, we will not service unattended bicycles.
Do Trip Interruption, Free Rental Car, Theft Reward or Legal Fee Reimbursement benefits apply to bicycles?
No, bicycles are not eligible for Trip Interruption, Free Rental Car, Theft Reward or Legal Fee Reimbursement benefits.
