DMV FAQs

What is REAL ID? +

Enforcement date: 5/7/2025

REAL ID is a standard state-issued license/identification that also meets minimum security standards set by the federal government. With a REAL ID you are able to board domestic commercial flights and access certain federal facilities and nuclear power plants. The Real ID indicator, a Gold Star on your license/state ID, or US Flag for an enhanced license/State ID, indicates your credential is Real ID compliant.

How do I get a REAL ID

State DMVs/RMV’s and select AAA branches can upgrade your license/state ID to be REAL ID-compliant when provided with proper paperwork. Visit your state’s motor vehicle agency website for a checklist of documentation required to obtain a REAL ID.

Are there other documents that are REAL ID compliant?

Yes! Although the enforcement date begins on May 7, 2025, you do not have to have your REAL ID by this date if you have another REAL ID-compliant credential. The most popular ones a person may have include:

  • Valid U.S. or foreign government-issued passport.
  • Global Entry card.
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID.
  • See TSA website for full list.

REAL ID planning and appointments:

  • The state registry offices and AAA branches are seeing unprecedented demand for upgrades to REAL ID due to the enforcement date.
  • If you plan to fly domestically after the REAL ID enforcement date, you will need your actual plastic credential by your travel date unless you have another REAL ID-compliant credential. Paper temporary licenses are not REAL ID-compliant.
  • It can take two to three weeks to receive your plastic credential.
  • Appointments can be booked up to two weeks in advance.
  • Due to demand, you may have to travel further than your normal office to secure an appointment; walk-ins cannot be accommodated at this time.
  • Prepare for your visit by using your state’s documentation checklist, do not deviate from the list; if you present something that is not authorized or listed on the checklist, your transaction will not be successful.

Registry Services General Information

Effective 5/7/2025, a new federal law goes into effect requiring a new type of identification – REAL ID – for anyone 18 years and older flying within the United States or entering a Federal building that requires identification.

After 5/7/2025, a standard license or state-issued ID will NOT be acceptable to pass through domestic airport security checkpoints. You will need the REAL ID endorsement or another acceptable form of identification, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card, or US military ID.

REAL ID endorsements for a CT Driver’s License or CT State ID can be processed at Fairfield County AAA branch locations, but you will need to present certain physical documents to prove your identity. If in interested in obtaining a REAL ID, please refer to the CT DMV website for complete information, download the application, and see a list of acceptable documents that must be physically presented during your transaction. If your license transaction requires a new photo, one will be taken by the DMV system. Please note we cannot use user-submitted photos, or photos from a mobile phone for a DMV transaction. The US Dept. of Citizenship and Immigration Services requires government agencies to verify immigration & lawful presence status as part of a REAL ID Driver’s License, or Non-Driver ID card. Individuals presenting a US Passport, Naturalization Certificate, Certificate of Citizenship or other Citizenship documents at either the DMV or AAA, may not be able to complete their transaction immediately. The SAVE verification process provides free updates to individuals and will notify you when you can return to the agency to complete your transaction.
